East Sea is the sea where is located between Korea and Japan. The 'East Sea' has been famous in East Asia for over 2,000 years.
In contrast, Sea of Japan rarely used the name before the 18th century. After Japan invaded Korea in the early 20th century, the name, Sea of Japan, spread internationally.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) confirmed this sea as the Sea of Japan in 1929. During the colonial period of Korea (1910 - 1945), No rights against Japan were allowed in Korea.
