Dear Ji Eun,

AMS's present journals style is to follow  the guidance in Merriam-Webster's dictionary for geographical names. If you look up "East Sea" in that source, it says "See Sea of Japan". The entry for Sea of Japan is:

"Arm of the western North Pacific between Japan and Korea — traditionally called Sea of Japan in the majority of English-language sources; called East Sea by English-speaking Koreans and by some present-day English-language sources."

Thus, "Sea of Japan" is the name we use for this body of water, although it may be called "East Sea" by some of our authors.

We do review this policy and the source it is derived from periodically, and we will add this term to the list for the next review. If you have any specific information as to what international sources may be better than the Merriam-Webster dictionary, please let me know.

Best regards,
Mike
